America's Forgotten Hero

The Story of the First Solo Atlantic Crossing from West to East in 1876

In 1876 America celebrated 100 years of independence. Exhibitions and special events were organised as a wave of patriotism swept across the country.

In the fishing port of Gloucester Massachusetts a young Danish immigrant wanted to be part of the celebrations. Twenty nine year old Alfred Johnson decided to attempt to be the first person to sail across the Atlantic Ocean.

His boat was a modified Grand Banks fishing dory which was painted red, white and blue; the colours of the American flag. His tiny craft was aptly named "Centennial."

Exposed to the elements, through storms and a shark attack, this is the remarkable story of Alfred "Centennial" Johnson's journey. America's forgotten hero.
